Consultation and guidance given not in the framework of service does not serve as a replacement for a physician’s examination or consultation, and is not considered a “medical diagnosis” or “medical opinion". In all cases of urgency, distress or emergency (physical and/or mental), seek medical care with a family doctor, closest emergency room, and/or ambulatory service.

When Should You Consider Treatment Abroad?

When Should You Consider Treatment Abroad?
The decision whether to seek treatment abroad or not is dependent on the type of treatment, and its quality in Israel.

There are at least three different scenarios where one should consider seeking treatment outside of Israel:
The treatment does not exist in Israel.
The treatment is available in Israel, however the doctors are not experienced enough.
The diagnosis given is very rare.

Even if your case fits these criteria, you should take into account the two following variables, before deciding on a flight:

  1. “The home advantage” – it’s always better, if possible, to be treated in a place that’s familiar; if by language, habits, culture, weather, and family support. This isn’t something that’s often thought about, but the fact of the matter is that many people have difficulty coping during hard situations, when away from home. And let’s not forget that a patient and his family’s mental state affect a speedy recovery.

  2. Finding a specialist – finding the right specialist is complicated, and it’s not easy to do the research alone. One of the criterions is to ensure enough experience, as well as leading experience and professionalism in the relevant field. Although experience is important, and it’s not recommended to undergo treatment from a doctor who isn’t experienced enough, quantity does not imply quality. Because the amount of patients abroad is large in comparison to Israel, physicians usually have adequate experience, in the various fields; however it could be that in spite of a certain doctor’s years of experience, their success rates could be low.

Some people feel that choosing a leading treatment centre will ensure them access to the best doctors, but this isn’t any guarantee; there are smaller, lesser known treatment centres that are excellent, and whose professionalism in their specific field is among the leading in the world.

Remember: Not all that glitters is gold. Medicine in Israel is outstanding, and in most cases the doctors here are experienced enough. Ask yourselves if the medical gain is worth the heavy price?
